Learn more about the masters of Shotokan karate.

The father of Shotokan Karate,
Master Gichen Funakoshi combined the elements of his training in the Okinawan styles of Shuri-te and Naha-te, both of which have origins in Shorin-Ryu and Chinese Shaolin Kung Fu into his own style of karate.

Master Funakoshi's pen name was 'Shoto' so Shotokan literally means Shoto's club.
