What is Shotokan Karate?
Shotokan Karate is a traditional martial art, which develops important skills useful in everyday life. It improves character and mental discipline as well as physical skill. Shotokan Karate is accessible to all: men, women, and children, with or without athletic ability. Karate trains both the mind and body to maximize physical effectiveness controlled by a clear, focused spirit.
How do I join?
Just stop by the Chesterfield Athletic Club! We're always happy to have new members come by and either observe a class or participate. Everyone is welcome to observe as many classes as they wish before joining. Also, new members may work out with our club on a trial basis (usually 2-3 classes) before it is necessary to register and pay dues. Before participating, you will be asked to sign a waiver, but you do not have to formally register with the club until you have decided that it is right for you. If you have any questions before coming by, please call, or send an email to our Chief Instructor (Barry Power) and he will be happy to answer any questions that you may have.
What equipment do I need?
For your first few classes, you need nothing more than loose fitting clothing (we practice without shoes and socks). We recommend sweat pants or shorts and a t-shirt. If you decide to join the club, you will need to purchase a traditional white Karate uniform (gi). These can be purchased at the MKA Dojo. Typically, a new beginner’s gi will cost in the range of $25-$35.
Is your Dojo affiliated with any larger Karate organizations?
The Missouri Karate Association is affiliated with the American Amateur Karate Federation (AAKF) and are active members with the International Traditional Karate Federation (ITKF). MKA Instructors and members attend seminars around the country. Most recently, the instructors of our club have attended seminars by renowned instructors including Master Hidetaka Nishiyama Sensei (Chairman of the Amateur American Karate Federation (AAKF), the International Traditional Karate Federation (ITKF) and a co-founder of the JKA), Central Regional Instructor Christopher Smaby Sensei, and South Atlantic Regional Instructor Toru Shimoji. The Instructors of the Missouri Karate Association believe that it is very important to seek instruction from dedicated karate masters.
If I have a belt from another dojo can I wear it in your dojo?
If your previous dojo is affiliated with a registered ITKF, JKA or AAKF dojo you’re welcome to wear your belt. The MKA policy is to have new students start their training wearing a white belt until they are evaluated by the MKA instructors.
Can children (under the age of 16) join your club?
Yes, The Missouri Karate Association has a beginner’s class just for children between the ages of 4 years to 10 years old. This class teaches children balance, discipline and to focus along with so much more. Parents are always welcome to train along side with their child.
If there are any further questions you might have please feel free to contact the Missouri Karate Association and one of the instructors will be happy to answer your questions.
