Why join the Missouri Karate Association?

Missouri Karate Association (MKA) is a family-oriented dojo supporting beginners through senior black belts. The primary instructors, the Power brothers, are in the prime of their karate careers. As National Gold Medal Champions they enthusiastically share their active tournament experience and the training they receive from top international instructors. Having trained together for over 20 years, the Power brothers have reached a comfortable level with one another that enables them to provide effective demonstrations for the class. The students are able to see how proper application of techniques can be used in real life threatening situations.

The MKA provides a great training atmosphere with lots of individual attention. One instructor leads the class while two other instructors circulate making sure students techniques are executed correctly. The instructors discuss and plan the development of each student. This individual attention helps the student develop to the maximum of his/her ability.

Why Shotokan Karate?

Shotokan Karate, a traditional martial art, develops important skills useful in everyday life. It improves character and mental discipline as well as physical skill. Shotokan Karate is accessible to all: men, women, and children, with or without athletic ability. Karate trains both the mind and body to maximize physical effectiveness controlled by a clear, focused spirit. Its practice leads to:

Self Defense

As a method of self-defense, karate is based on skill. Regardless of strength or size, a person can learn to exert great power. Sharper reaction time can be achieved through systematic training methods. Training enables all persons to gain confidence in their ability to protect themselves in compromising situations.

Balance and harmony of body and mind

Karate harmonizes intention, breath and movement. You achieve maximum power with minimum effort by integrating mental and physical energies in one direction.

Physical Conditioning

Karate builds strength, flexibility and agility, improves your aerobic endurance, safely strengthens the back and abdomen to stabilize your spine and joints, and improves posture. As a result of this functional conditioning you will experience better performance in all activities.

Longevity and quality of life

Research has found that regular exercise adds years to your life. Karate is more than regular exercise since it stimulates both body and mind. Research has also found that certain activities that stimulate the mind, like music and martial arts, also stimulate the growth of new brain cells even at advance age. It is a fact that most karate masters continue to train well into their eighties and nineties.

Skills of excellence for Children

The development of physical conditioning, coordination and strength is complemented by growth in self-confidence, self-esteem, concentration skills and interpersonal skills.
